Start with nothing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I made better versions of my kids’ favorite snacks for years before I owned anything specialized. So please don’t read this page as a shopping list you have to finish before you’re allowed to start. Read it as the order I’d buy things in if I were doing it again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The expensive ones. Real purchases with a long payback. I’d tell you to buy these last, once this has become a habit rather than an experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No plastic, no aluminum, no nonstick. That swap didn’t happen at once \u2014 it took a couple of years and I replaced things as they wore out.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storage first<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The cheapest step and the one that touches your food most often. Glass containers, and you’re most of the way there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Stainless, enamel, cast iron. Most of mine came secondhand and cost less than the nonstick I replaced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Cast iron lasts forever<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Which makes it one of the cheapest things in my kitchen when you spread it over the years I’ll use it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

About the cost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I won’t pretend some of this isn’t expensive. A good mixer or a grain mill is a real purchase, and I understand completely if it’s not the year for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here’s the math that convinced me. A box of the crackers, a box of the toaster pastries, a container of yogurt, a bag of granola \u2014 every week, for years. When I started making them instead, the ingredient cost per batch was a fraction of what I’d been spending, and the equipment quietly paid for itself in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some things pay you back fast. Yogurt and granola are the clearest. Bread takes longer. A grain mill takes the longest of anything I own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If money is tight, buy in that order: the things you’ll use weekly first, the specialized equipment much later, and nothing at all until a recipe has genuinely frustrated you without it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
